News Brief: SPECPOL

The first day in the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (SPECPOL) was one of excitement. Today's conference tackled the problems of the role of the UN peacekeeping operations and discussed ways and measures to regulate the trade of conflict minerals. Today’s round of debates has been remarkable. The debate over the resolution submitted by the delegate of Sierra Leone proposed a moderate solution that intends to resolve the troubles of the peacekeeping operations by means of both long and short-term solutions. Sierra Leone’s effort was questioned by numerous countries.  In the end, the resolution did not pass with eleven votes for and eighteen against.
