News Brief: Resolution from the ECOSOC Committee (General Assembly)

The General Assembly continued with a resolution submitted by the delegate of Chile from the ECOSOC Committee that calls on member nations to promote social entrepreneurship in marginalized, rural, or indigenous communities. The delegate stated the resolution was a “fundamental stepping stone to eliminating inequality...with the power to introduce massive social changes.”

An against speech was given by the delegate of Greece, who targeted Clauses 1 and 4 for their vagueness and Clause 6 for being impossible to carry out in current economic circumstances. This was followed by two for speeches from the delegates of Argentina and Ghana, and then another against speech from the delegate of Burkina Faso. In the latter speech, the delegate of Burkina Faso pointed out the infringement of national sovereignty that was occurring in the resolution. In the interest of time, a series of quick for and against speeches from a myriad of countries, such as India, Libya, Poland, and Samoa, were given.

With 63% of delegates voting against and 34% of delegates for, the resolution did not pass.
